Reasons Why The Anime Jerk Always Gets The Girl

You know it. Whenever you start a shoujo manga, and you get introduced to some rich, arrogant and perfect prince (of the school), someone the heroine either hates or admires, that she is ultimately going to end up with him. It doesn’t matter how many nice-guy-rivals there are to obstruct their dramatic romance. Haughty guys gets the girl any day.

There’s a simple reason for this: WE NEED A STORY, DUH!!! If the girl gets together with a nice guy and they start an ideal and peaceful relationship, how’s our story going to develop?! Sure, there might be circumstances that break them apart, but since the guy is so nice, he’ll solve all the problems, comfort and love the girl, and the conflict is easily resolved. We can’t have such a simplistic story– readers want more. They need excitement, they need to get their emotions messed up and get caught up in the riveting plot.

So we have the sadistic and unyielding prince. The one who rejects all, the one who is unattainable, the one who causes much hurt to the heroine. Also the one who shyly loves her, protects her at all the right situations, and slowly opens up to her. It’s a gradual and tender process, and we watch carefully as they tread closer to each other. Because our prince is extremely flawed, he makes a lot of mistakes, which puts forgiveness and trust on the line, and makes the couple’s relationship much closer when everything blows over.

The sheer amount of character development spent on these characters already make them worthy, intriguing characters, and more realistic with their flaws. It’s certainly more romantic and heart-pounding to watch the calm honor student get mad with desperation when he can’t find the girl, or watching him angrily holding his indignation, acting nonchalant, when she goes off with another guy. It’s all these cute details that matter.

And the handsomeness/smartness/richness just adds on to the package. A perfect example of what these character look like would be…

Yup! So it’s always the flawed characters that make everything more interesting. Heartbreaks are nearly always guaranteed, which makes us hooked onto the plot because we need to see the girl stand up again. And seeing a little nice boy under that tough guy exterior would make anyone smile. That’s why jerks are needed. Girl’s aren’t masochists. But that’s also why I think that nigahiga is wrong. Nice guys won’t finish last in real life. Because few of us are as strong-willed as the heroines in anime, and we’d only take that much bullshit from a guy before giving up.

Oh yeah I’m gonna recommend this shoujo, it’s called Absolute Witch. It’s pretty darn good, and I read all 12 volumes in one sitting, which is…. rare. The genres of this manhwa are all so tempting already. Adventure, comedy, drama, fantasy, historical, romance, shoujo, supernatural. EXACTLY MY TYPE OF SHOUJO! I absolutely love historical stories because the art is always so classy and unique!

So.. the story has something to do with witches, and i’ll not spoil further (stop reading now if you’re going to read the manhwa!), but I bet you can guess who she ends up with since I recommended this in this post. The guy’s not that arrogant though. He’s not exactly a jerk, and I liked him a lot!

Don’t do stupid crap to my kiddo.

I hereby vote that as the most romantic sentence of the year. You have got to give Absolute Witch a shot.

Shoujo is addictive.

But there are some really good exceptions. In Kaichou Wa Maid-sama she doesn’t end up with the arrogant and rich guy. I hope…

Yeah there are exceptions! I haven’t read KWMS in a really long while…the arrogant and rich guy is Tora? I thought right from the beginning that she would definitely end up with Usui haha. He’s the classic and best pick. :D

Yes, it’s Tora. I also think/hope that she ends up with Usui. You should continue reading it!! It’s so addicting, even though there are already 77 chapters until now, it’s SO good :D Those mangas seem good, but are there any sex/nudity scenes? (I still don’t have the courage to read that :P)

Mm I know she’ll end up with Usui! I’ve stopped, but I remember them being a strong couple, and Usui’s the hot favorite so i’m confident that they’ll stay together. I think i’ll start reading when the manga gets completed.. I tend to avoid uncompleted ones nowadays because it sucks to wait. HAHA WHICH MANGA? Absolute witch doesn’t have those scenes. It’s good that you avoid those! I’ve been corrupted already!

I think you’re absolutely right! It’s because of these ‘jerks’ that the shoujo mangas are so heartrending and our hearts throb so much while we read it! But then I think that sometimes the nice guys also win, like poor guys at least once haha. I know! Shoujo is so addictive, it is almost everything I read… I know, so few variety… Can you tell me from which manga the first image is? It looks pretty good ant the art is neat,

Yup! There’re a few stories i’ve read where the nicer guy wins after a long fight and he really deserves it. As long as I get an engaging plot and good character development and feel that the winning character has been justified, then all is fine :) Shoujo is indeed mesmerizing, a work of tender pathos. Love it a lot too!

One manga whose nice-guy character whom I thought ought to win over the heroine was L-DK, though that didn’t happen… Oh that image is from Houkago X Ponytail— the manga is really promising though there’s only 2 chapters out. There’s already two uncommon love interests.

Does L-DK or Houkago X Ponytail have any sex scenes? (This was what I meant to say in the other comment) :D

Oh no they don’t! L-DK has some sexual tension though.. Houkago X Ponytail has only a few chapters out so I can’t guarantee that things won’t happen later on, but it doesn’t seem to be heading that way. They’re both great stories!

Usui may not be arrogant but he’s still tsundere and certainly has the appeal of a bad boy (he’s strong and handsome). He’s exactly the type of male lead you’ll see in most shojo series, just a bit more laid-back. And of course the reason girls always end up with jerks isn’t just because it makes for a better story or because there’s more interesting character development – but because this is the type of story that sells. Reforming the bad boy is a female fantasy. But there certainly are shojo series that take it too far by making the bad boy an abusive jerk that you can’t understand how any girl could fall for him, in manga or in real life (such as Ryoki from Hot Gimmick!).

Usui is too much like a prince and has so many desirable traits. But yeah– I guess females love it when the jerk changes and becomes kind for the heroine. Haha those evil, cruel sadists are everywhere but the girl always unconditionally falls in love with them just because they’re handsome or did some kind deed 10 years ago. How those girls have the courage to go on even after the guy humiliates her befuddles me. And I will never comprehend how they can love someone with such.. dirty personalities. Oh and in some smut manga, the girl always succumbs to sex attacks! Like dumb Kirara from Love Celeb. Such weakness leaves a bad aftertaste.

But yes.. to see the change of a man in love is highly gratifying. Tsunderes are fine. They’re cute and not inherently evil at all! Some sadists/jerks are okay, just haughty because they’ve been bred into it by their superior status. Those are all okay, but not if they reach the extremities of being exceedingly pompous and downright insulting. It would be painful to read a story with such a character, but mostly the guys are moderate bad boys with a good heart, so all is good.

Shuojo manga males suck big time. No wonder most of the guys hate shoujo and prefer Shounen/Seinen.

Why would any sane girl choose an abusive jerk over a fun/nice/quirky guy? That makes no sense.

That is absolutely right, if you look at it from the realistic point of view. Sadly abusive jerks in manga tend to be the fun and quirky ones! Also this is why females who get too obsessed with reading manga (or movies) get unrealistic expectations about their partners :( They associate toxic possessiveness or rudeness with love, or expect some hidden tenderness to come out of an abusive boyfriend. Or they keep searching for a perfect prince that does not exist. Sigh
